it takes about 1/2 an hour. Go down to pier 39. They have tours there. There really all the same.

  2. AustinWorthington Says:

An interesting fact is that the only official reason that Al Capone was ever taken to prison was because he was so far behind on his taxes. While he was sent to Alcatraz for his numerous other crimes, that was the only official reason ever given.

  3. Fresita Says:

It was a prison from which no one has ever escapen from–except for two people who MIGHT have made it but probably died in San Francisco Bay. Also, gangster legend Al Capone, the driver for Bonnie and Clyde, and many others were held here. None escaped. Today, Alcatraz is an important tourist attraction.

The saddest thing about Alcatraz is how close it was to a “free world”. I remember the inmates reported that on New Years Eve they could here all the high-enders at the near by yacht club partying, and if they had a cell across from the window they could see one of the most beautiful skylines in the world.

With the exception of the ranger-led night tours, Alcatraz is usually done as a self-guided tour. The audio tape is included in the ferry tickets to Alcatraz. You can choose to not listen to it, but you have to pay for it. Alcatraz costs $24.50 round-trip only (you're not allowed to stay on the island overnight).

Vallejo is $12.50 one-way. You should only take this one if you plan on doing the Six Flags theme park, however, as that's the one attraction in Vallejo (an otherwise non-descript suburb).

The Sausalito ferry is $7.50 one-way. It is the cheapest ferry ride. The town itself is nice. But to really appreciate the surrounding Marin Headlands, you should bring bikes onto the ferry.

You could ask about it's history as a military prison
    -it's history with American Indians
    -stories of escapes
-how it transitioned from a military prison to a civilian prison
-why it was eventually shut down
-what parts are closed off to the public now

  7. DEMONIMACHOMASTER Says:

can you do ghost tours there?

  8. Sara Says:

Several reasons. Some prisoners were too risky to have work any where, so they just left them alone in their cell as much as possible. Others were looking for a chance at parole, so they volunteered to work. Others still were more or less on a system where they would be picked maybe say, every other day, while somebody else got picked the days in between.

I am a hotel concierge in San Francisco and I consistently help my guests visit Alcatraz. Yes, purchase your tickets in advance by going to http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com. They are the only authorized ferry service that lands on the island. The cost is $16.50 for the daytime, audio tour and $23.50 for the tours at night. DON'T pay any more than that.

  14. biscayne55 Says:

You can make an online reservation up to 90 days in advance. October is off-season though, so a couple days advance notice should be sufficient.
